PRO Transcribed from copies of PRO documents. Some of the photocopies I have to work from are wretched quality, and I'm not particularly good at deciphering 18thC handwriting. As a result, there are missing words and likely, I fear, more than a few errors. These are mine (Marg's) not Don's. Needless to say, help with fill-ins and corrections are always warmly welcomed.
Ross Cornwallis, Charles, Marquis. The Correspondence of Charles, First Marquis Cornwallis. 2d ed. Ed. Charles Derek Ross. 3 vols. London: J. Murray, 1859.
Stevens Stevens, Benjamin Franklin. The Campaign in Virginia, 1781.2 vols. London, 1888.
Tarleton Tarleton, Banastre. A History of the Campaigns of 1780 and 1781 in the Southern Provinces of North America. London: Printed for T. Cadell, in the Strand, 1787.

2 Letters displayed in bold face appear in Tarleton's Campaigns, but are not on the PRO/30/11 list. They have been added to this list for reference.

3 Highlighted line items are skirmishes involving the Legion. These are included as reference points.

4 This document is dated Nov 5 in the PRO catalog. That is the date Tarleton wrote on it, but the letter itself refers to events at Blackstocks, and is clearly a follow-up of his report of Nov 24. [ back ]

5 The copy in Greene is actually addressed to Col. Francis Lock. According to the editorial comments (Greene, 7:228n) several copies were sent to various officers. The one catalogued in the PRO was likely addressed to Colonel James Huggins since no "Col. Hagens" can be identified. [ back ]

6 This description from the PRO catalog is a misreading. According to McArthur, he countermanded his own previous order upon Tarleton's arrival in camp. [ back ]
