Whitehall 6th Novemr 1780
My Lord,
I have had the honor to receive your Lordships Letter of the 4th Instant, with the Extract from Lord Cornwallis's Letter of the 21st of August last therein enclosed. When I laid before the King the names of Major Tarleton and Captain Ross, His Majesty was pleased to direct that the latter should be promoted to the Rank of Major of which I have had the honor to acquaint your Lordship, and His Majesty was pleased to express his sense of Major Tarleton's Services in very flattering Terms, but did not think proper to give him any additional Rank, he having very lately only been appointed to the Rank of Major.
I have the Honor to be
My Lord
Your Lordships most obedt
& most humble Servant
Amherst
Right Hon'ble
Lord Geoe Germain &c &c &c
