Angel Pictures: 14th-18th CenturiesAngel art sometimes seems coextensive with Western art in general; one could easily collect a thousand angel images from nativity and annunciation scenes alone. I have therefore concentrated on images in which there was relatively more attention to the angels, on more unusual angel scenes (Jacob's ladder, Tobit's adventure), and on the best, most famous depictions. To this rule I have made one exception. Raphael's bored angels are so famous, so familiar, so ubiquitous and ultimately so irritatingthe artistic equivalent of the babyback ribs songthat they and the dozens of parodies they have inspired have been exiled to another page!
