Winterwings Festival
Plan to attend the 32nd annual Winter Wings Festival on President's Day Weekend. Home to the largest concentration of wintering Bald Eagles in the lower 48 states in both south central Oregon and northern California, the Klamath Basin is a key stopover on the Pacific Flyway. Hosting 80% of the birds that use the Flyway, a total of six separate nearby refuges comprise the total National Wildlife Refuge complex spanning nearly 200,000 acres. A unique, strong cooperative partnership between farming, water resources, and the refuges provides an abundance of prime habitat that attracts vast numbers of waterfowl and raptors. Annual Migratory Bird Festival
The Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge will hold the annual Migratory Bird Festival. It will be a fun-filled, family friendly day of free activities and other scheduled events. Some of the scheduled events include morning bird walks, mist netting, bird banding, and trips to view and explain various refuge habitats and identify both migratory and resident bird species. A memorial service will be held at the Living Memorial Sculpture Garden in honor of veterans who have died in the line of duty. The service will take place at the Hot LZ Wall where Dr. John B. This event starts on Saturday morning with a scrumptious breakfast hosted by the Westwood Museum at the Westwood community center. Afterwards, enjoy our giant parade that leads everyone to the park where the fun begins! There you will find live Blues music all day featuring popular blues bands. Don't miss the logging show, a rare and exciting sporting event. While you're there, browse the arts & craft vendors and grab lunch. Try your luck at Blue Ox Bingo, where Babe the Blue Ox (or reasonable facsimile) will walk around until a "chip" is dropped. Whoever owns the square where the chip lays wins up to $1250! The Festival celebrates its agriculture heritage as the largest producer of wild rice in the world. Summit Century Bike Ride
There's no ride quite like the Mt. Shasta Summit Century. Challenging climbs. Breathtaking views. Lightly trafficked, rural roads. And a cloverleaf route that encourages you to test yourself -- you're never more than a downhill away from home. Four routes await you -- including the Super Century that's tougher than the famed Markleeville Death Ride (it's like a Tour de France mountain stage). Annual Bizz-Johnson Marathon and Run
For those high-performance athletes, a marathon, 1/2 marathon, and 10 kilometer run is scheduled annually at the Bizz-Johnson Trail outside of Westwood and Susanville. The Bizz Johnson Trail begins at Mason Station and travels through scenic Lassen National Forest. The first few miles of the course climb 280 feet through the forest to Westwood Junction, then it’s downhill to the finish at Susanville, with a 1300-foot descent over the final 20 miles. The trail follows the route of the old Fernley and Lassen Branch Line of the Southern Pacific Railroad, built in 1914.z
