  • Target
    A submarine.
  • Tars
Old wooden-ship naval term for sailors, sometimes still heard today when used by old salts.
  • Tender
A Tender is a mother ship (probably a repair ship) for a destroyer or submarine (and maybe other smaller craft).
  • Thermocline
A temperature division in the water where the temperature abruptly changes, causing the sonar sound waves to split and deflect down and up, effectively hiding any suib luiring right under the thermocline.
  • Thief
    Unknown in the US Navy.
  • Tin Can
A destroyer, destroyer mine-sweeper, destroyer mine-layer, or destroyer escort. Referred to as "small boys" in radio transmissions during World War Two. In more current times a Frigate would also qualify.
  • Tin Can Sailor
God's own sailors, the real men of the blue water (deep ocean) navy, i.e., Destroyer Sailors. Not to be confused with the wimps and civies that sail in subs and carriers.
  • Tompkin
The plug that goes into the end of a gun barrel and lost frequently when forgotten at GQ.
  • Topside
    Above the main deck.
  • Torpedo
A self-propelled device whose sole purpose in life was to find a target and end its life (and presumably that of the target). Sometimes the "device" would become confused as to what was a proper target and what was a target of "opportunity".
  • Transducer
The collection of hundreds of bars that generate the sound waves.
  • Trash
Garbage that used to be deposited in trash cans or receptacles that were emptied over the fantail underway or taken to the pier if in port.
  • Turn To
    Go to work.
