- Jack
The flag flown from the bow of any U.S. Navy ship when in port.
It is identical to the upper-left quandrant of the U.S. flag (white
stars on a blue field). Sometimes called "union jack".
- Jack O'the Dust
The Commissary man in charge of loading stores.
Derived from the fact that most early provisions were dry goods; flour,
beans etc. and created much dust when taken aboard.
- Jacob's Ladder
Two ropes or chains with many slats or rungs secured
between them to act as "vertical stairs". Usually hung over the side of
a ship to allow access between a "liberty boat" and the "quarter-deck".
Usually used when anchored or tied to a buoy and not alongside a dock.
