- Aft
Back.
- Anchor Watch
A watch set up when the ship is at anchor. Used to check the ship's position
on a regular schedule to guard against "draggin the hook".
- Anchors Aweigh
The song every sailor knows, but no one sings.
- ASROC
An acronym for Anti-Submarine ROCket. It was basically a
homing torpedo with a solid-fuel rocket assembly that could travel several
miles from the ship and was the US Navy's answer to high-speed submarines
(targets). Being a solid fueled booster, the thrust and
duration of the
rocket's firing was fixed and therefore range was controlled by altering
the angle of launch. After a fixed time the torpedo would
be detached from
the booster and soft-land via parachute. The torpedo
utilized its own small
sonar system to detect and home in to the target.
- ASW Officer
Anti-submarine warfare officer.
- A.W.O.L.
Over the hill, missed the ship, not back from Liberty.
