  • DASH
    Drone Anti-Submarine Helicopter - A small remotely controlled helicopter that would drop a homing torpedo over a target and then follow it in to make sure that it was operating normally.
  • Datum
    Datum: The last known contact position, either surfaced or submerged, of a "target".
  • Davy Jones' Locker
    Under the ocean, as in "went to Davy Jones' locker". Drowned or sunk.
  • DC
    Damage control or "discarded clothing"; clothing found with name stamped on it but that man was no longer assigned to the ship...name was "lined through", stamped with a red "DC" stamp.
  • Deck
    Floor.
  • Deck Ape
    Any ships member of the "deck force".
  • Deck crawler
    A needle gun.
  • Deep Six
    Throw "over the side", get rid of.
  • Degaussing
    When a ship leaves port it can go over the degaussing range to demagnetize the hull.
  • Dip Colors
    Military ships passing each other dip the National flag, and the topside crew stands at attention.
  • Dog Down
    As in to "dog down a hatch or a door". To watertight a door or hatch by closing the one big lever or separate dogs around the door in the proper order.
  • Double Up
    Taking a clove hitch around the bollard when no more slippage is allowed and the ship is secured.
  • Dress Blues
    The blue uniform with piping on the headpiece and wrists.
  • Dress Whites
    Any clean white uniform worn with the black silk neckerchief.
  • Dungarees
    Blue, bell-bottomed, close weave, light denim pants. Precursor to the sixties bell-bottomed fashion, which looked a lot better on a pretty girl. Originally for emergency flotation if ship sinks and you have no raft, etc.. Flipping wet pants over head to fill with air gives a few minutes of floatation aided by the extra room in the tied-off, bell-bottomed legs.
