Welcome to our 1920s New Jersey Highways page. We've always been fascinated with old roads, as well as any reminders of a past time that still lurk in the modern world, waiting to be discovered. We are not "professionals," but simply amateur historians who are interested in photographing and researching NJs first highway system. Also, the site is not as complete as we would like, so we will continue to update it as our travels allow. We would also like to get some historical photographs and do more local research. It will always be a work in progress, and any contributions are always welcome.
Beginning in 2000, we set out to photograph any remnants of these old roads. In many cases we had to travel back to the roads several times to locate the bridges, so this has been a long and exciting journey for us. We were able to actually find many original bridge abutments with the original numbers and dates stamped in them..almost 80 years later.
Over the last few years, the state has erected barricades along many highway bridges, which is good for safety - but unfortunately for us obscures the bridge markings. We've tried to photograph as many unobscured bridges as we could, but in some cases our only choice was to photograph the route number stamp under the barricade. Where we couldn't find any remaining traces of the old numbers, we will eventially just put up pictures of the road as it is today.
Here are the roads. Click on the one you want to visit. Happy travels!
