Scenic U.S. Routes

FHWA does not recognize Scenic US routes as a seperate routes in the MUTCD. At least one was listed by AASHTO in the 1989 route log of U.S. Numbered Highways. Scenic routes begin and end at the parent route. They are best described as a subset of the Alternate route type. The Maryland listing may have been the only officially designated "Scenic" US route. No suffix has yet been attached to this type of road. The Rand McNally US road atlas for 2000 showed the Scenic banner on the cover.

I'm not sure why this designation was needed in the first place. - RVD
