City U.S. Routes

Also suffixed as C, this designation was used from 1933 until the early 1990's. It was primarily used in the Midwest. City routes were meant to carry traffic into a city on the previous mainline alignment of a US route, after an improved routing was constructed that bypassed city traffic. These newer routings often sent traffic around the economically important downtown retail / commercial area. These routes left the main US route and returned at a later point. It also made for a nice suffix progression: A for the longer Alternate routes, B for the mid-sized Bypass routes, and C for the shorter City routes, with T for the Temporary routes. The CITY designation was largely discontinued in favor of BUSINESS (BUS) in the 1960's, thus muddying the 'B' suffix meaning. Only one City route was in the 1989 US route log, US 67C in Searcy, AR. The CITY designation is currently inactive.

All routes listed from north to south and / or east to west.

Length for US 67C in Searcy, AR by 1989 US Numbered Highways

My Opinion: I'd like to see "City" reinstated as a designation to be used by former routes of US highways that are no longer part of state highway systems, but maintanied by City or County Agencies.
