Also known as ALT or suffixed as A, this designation has been around as long as the US highway system. The current definition was established in 1934. Alternate routes are used to show routes which leave the main US route and return at a later point, generally over a route longer or built to a slightly lesser standard than the mainline highway. ALT routes are primarily meant to allow for traffic relief on the main route. Alternate or 'A' routes have been used as Business, Bypass or City routes in states that do not use those route types. Some states, especially in the northeastern US, sign state routes with the same number as the US highway and add an 'A' suffix, making them Alternate routes in spirit if not in shield shape (e.g. Massachusetts' 3A & New York's 9A). Pennsylvania experimented with THRU as type of this route in the late 1940's and 1950's. | |
