Washington State
Washington's Native American heritage is rich and colorful. The
Northwest Indian culture evokes distinctive images of salmon fishing,
mythical animal motifs, cedar forests, dugout canoes, totem poles,
potlatches, ceremonial masks, and skillful woodcarving. There are 26
reservations throughout the state, from the Northwest Coast Indians in the
west to the Columbia Plateau tribes east of the Cascades. Our region is
enriched by their historical and cultural contributions.
For over 10,000 years the native people of Washington have
successfully managed their environment and sustained themselves on the rich
bounty of the region - harvesting fish and ocean mammals from the sea and
rivers, shellfish from the shores, and game and fruit from the land. History
reveals that these were sophisticated societies based on hierarchies of rank
and privilege, worldly commerce, ceremonial pageantry, and fine art - where
man and nature were kindred in spirit. They taught respect for the physical
world, and had reverence for the supernatural.
The cultural identities of Washington's tribes have persevered
through time. Today, to our benefit, Northwest Native Americans continue to
carry on their unique ancestral traditions and rituals.
