'die grosse Zeit'
a German Serial History Magazine
cover page of a bound volume
'Die grosse Zeit' ('Important Times / Eventful Times') was a German serial history magazine, each weekly issue designed to be part of a large multi volume account of the Great War suitable for bounding after a set number of issues had appeared. It was similar in form and appearance to the many other German, French and British multi-volume serial history publications that appeared during the war years, some of which were later re-issued as complete series after the war.
'Die grosse Zeit', Illustrierte Geschichte des Weltkrieges, Der Krieg 1914 in Wort und Bild, Illustrierte Weltkriegskronik, the French Panorama de la Guerre and the British 'the Great War', 'the Times History of the War', 'the Manchester Guardian History of the War' and others were all similar weekly magazines. All featured abundant illustrations and photographic material, thematic issues and extended text articles on the history of the war, usually on events of several weeks previously. Therefore, in contrast to post-war publications, these large history series give a more parachoial views of war events since they tend to focus on newsworthy happenings, which is not the same as events which prove to be important in the light of history in the long run.
For all these inherent shortcomings, 'die grosse Zeit' and other like publications, provide interesting illustrative material, and as is usually the case with German publications, many fine and little known drawings and paintings of war-time scenes and events.
