Historical oddments

Like Noah, Like Utnapishtim: Dispatching Birds in Ancient Times on other examples of using birds to find land, from Jewish Heritage Online Magazine.

Noah's Second Landing at Ararat by Michael Feldberg, Ph.D, on a 19c. attempt to create a Jewish city in the Erie Canal.

The Children of Noah

Amazon. The Children of Noah by Raphael Patai. (See Princeton UP blurb.) Also available in hardcover.

Reviewed by Jenny Diski, London Review of Books (August 20, 1998). Stresses Jewish disinterest and fear of water. (The same, however, could be said of much of the elite literature of Greece and Rome.) Almost all of the review is also here.

Reviewed by John A. Tvedtnes, Foundation for Ancient Research and Mormon Studies journal (1998). Interesting review, although not in what it has to say about Noah. The Mormon angle is that Mormons believe the new world was populated by seafaring Jews in the 6c. BC. More generally, to quote a friend, "The Mormons think the Jews are neat!"

Portuguese-language history of Mah Jong, which somehow brings in Noah's Ark!

Amazon. Noah's Ark: An Annotated Encyclopedia of Every Animal Species in the Hebrew Bible by Donald Schwartz (2000). Okay, it's not really about Noah, but :

"…provides a wealth of information on each animal in the biblical text, including taxonomic designation, interesting zoological information, references to legends in Near Eastern mythology, rabbinic insights found in the Talmud, Midrash, and halacha (Jewish law), and a complete concordance that locates each time the species appears in the Holy Scriptures."
