Booklists

Annotated Bibilography from Narrative Identity: The Mermaid Myth. Not restricted to "mermaid" stuff, it includes related gender books, like Wurtzel's Bitch.

Siren Song Bookshop. Lengthy annoated list of novels, children's stories, and mythology books. The depth of this list is largely why I haven't attempted my own.

Rogue Mermaid: Book Shop, with some annotations.

Mermaids in Literature list from Mermaid.Net. Different ages and types.

Short bibliography from Karen Jacubec's History of Mermaids page.

Cryptozoological Bibliography by Dr. Karl P.N. Shuker. Only some of the mermaid items are really cryptozoological; scroll down to "Other Specific Mythological Animals."

Mermaid Books

Amazon. Sirens: Symbols of Seduction by Meri Lao, offers more than 160 illustrations together with mythological and psychological commentary. (Also in hardcover.)

Short review from Alternative Press Books (scroll down).

"Ultimately, Lao reveals that the seductive power of the sirens, which once lay in their subversiveness, has now been captured by a mass culture enchanting us in the service of commerce, and by the mechanical voices which warn us of ever recurrent disasters."

Amazon. Mermaids: Sirens of the Sea by Kerry Colburn, "gift book" combines artwork and short and long quotations. I seen it, but it looks light-weight.

Amazon. From the Deep Waters: Maidens of Myth and Mystery by Toshiyuki Takamiya.

Amazon. Mermaids: Nymphs of the Sea by Theodore Gachot, Leah Demchick. Blurb describes it as a "lavish gift book, replete with many special features, including vellum pages, metallic ink, an enchanting gatefold, a fortune-telling mermaid and a mermaid tattoo, is a tactile, enticing trip under the sea."

Amazon. The Book of Mermaids by Patricia Saxton. Amazon reviewer describes it as "the quintessential encyclopedia of Mermaidolidgy."

Amazon. Sirens and Other Daemon Lovers: Magical Tales of Love and Seduction by Ellen Datlow, Terri Windling. Amazon promises "obsessions, lust, passion, and ecstacy." Includes entries by Joyce Carol Oates, and others. Can't find any reviews.

Amazon. Teenage Mermaid by Ellen Schreiber (Grades 5–8). Listed lots of places, but I have no idea whether it's good.

Amazon. Mermaid Tales from Around the World by Mary Pope Osborne, illustrated by Troy Howell (Ages 7–11). Apparently retells twelve tales, including The Little Mermaid.
