To prevent her swamping entire sections—her black and whites are particularly numerous—I chose a representative and striking 35 or so. L!! Jennifer Miller's "pointless and weird online comic about two gryphons." Dark Natasha has a few griffons, many more angels, dragons and faeries, in a distinctive (and rather adult) style. Ursula Vernon / www.metalandmagic.com has a few griffons and a very funny monologue on griffon art and griffon artists: "I hate gryphons. Can't stand 'em. It's not that there's anything wrong with them per se, and a few people have managed to do some lovely stuff with 'em, but they're a threshold drug. Perkins has some very arresting fantasy art, including griffins, dragons and mermaids. The Hermitage has an extremely rich collections of Scythian, Pazyryk and Bosporan (Ukranian-Greek) art. And what art it is—much of it in wood, leather and even fabric preserved by the acidic, anerobic grave environments. The objects themselves reveal the art history, eg., with reference to a Scythian Bronze Plaque (4c. BC): "Adopted from oriental mythology but interpreted in a new way, this was perhaps the Scythians' favourite fabulous creature."Talking about a Calathos of Arimaspi Fighting Griffins (4c. BC), they write: "The calathos's surface is completely covered with relief representing young barbarians (Arimaspi) fighting griffins, which recalls the myth of the griffins guarding gold, frequently illustrated in the art of the Bosporan kingdom."
