Malmédy massacre, Jewish Virtual Library

Massacre at Malmédy by Michael Reynolds, for World War II magazine (date unstated). Excellent long article reviews the evidence:

"Sadly, incomplete and rushed investigations, suspicions about the methods used to obtain confessions, and inadequate or flawed evidence ensured that guilty men escaped proper punishment, and there can be little doubt that some innocent men were punished during the trial. In the final analysis, justice itself became another casualty of the incident."

Apparently there was a 1970 Wargame called "Operation Greif" from Guidon Games.

Eric Wood (106th Infantry Division)

The Incredible Valor of Eric Wood by R. Ernest Dupuy, Col. USA, ret. on Eric Wood (106th Infantry Division), who led a few US soldiers stranded behind German lines in the Bullingen Forest, and died a hero. He was posthumously awarded the U.S. Distinguished Service Cross and the Belgian Cross of Chevalier of the Order of Leopold I with Gold Palm, the only American in WWII to receive this honor. This is a gripping, inspiring story. From Hans Wijers's Battle of the Bulge site.

More detail from the "Notable Alumni" section of the Valley Forge Military Academy.

"A Soldier's, Soldier, The Hero From Bedford County" by Corporal John Gatens. Less detail, but information on his descendants, from St. James Episcopal Church, Bedford, Pennsylvania.

"Even in this tale told so somberly it is impossible to miss the quintessentially American stubbornness and idealism it reflects in its down-to-earth way: as though there were nothing out of the ordinary about men who, for the sake of a principle, would defy captors holding the power of life or death."
