This portrait was probably painted in 1784-5, after Hanger finally returned to England from America. Assuming this is the correct date, then George was roughly thirty-three at the time -- i.e., considerably younger than he looks. This may very well be the only contemporary painting, aside from the Reynolds portrait of Banastre Tarleton, which illustrates the uniform of the British Legion.
The painting was commissioned by George's friend, the Prince of Wales, and is still in the Royal Collection. As of July, 2001, it is on loan to Greensboro, North Carolina, as part of a temporary historical exhibit.
The image is 76.2 cm. x 63.5 cm.
