Kursk - Motorised Unit Comparison
The table below shows a count of the major components for the following types of division:
- German PanzerGrenadier Divsion
- The "GroßDeutschland" PanzerGrenadier Division
- Soviet Mechanised Corps - as per the 1942 shtat
- Soviet Mechanised Corps - as per the 1943 shtat
Note that the "men" counted are only the combat troops - the rifle squads, engineers and so on; they are counted as "squad-equivalents", not as individual men.
The key points from this comparison:
- "GD" was a very special case - the Wehrmacht's premier division
- The Mech Corps heavily outgunned the PzGrd Division in AFV's
- The Mech Corps has far more artillery tubes than the PzGrd Division
- The PzGrd Division does at least have the heavy guns to out-range the Soviets
- The Germans have far more organic transport - the Soviets frequently relied on the tanks to carry the troops
- The Soviets had a large edge in infantry
