Kursk - Combat Strengths and Casualties

This page provides my view of the different tank strengths of the units involved. as of 5th July 1943
Update for November 1999: I will be working to put in place the data from the CAA KOSAVE II study, plus other new data, over the enxt couple of months... please re-visit !
Strangly enough, I now feel more confident of the SOVIET numbers than I do of the German - so help out if you can ! The German numbers come from a number of different sources (please refer to the Sources page).
The main source for the (now much updated) Soviet numbers is the series of "Soviet Order of Battle World War II" by Charles C Sharp, available from Nafziger:

These are well worth buying (if you have enough $$ for all 11 volumes ;), as they are based on Soviet documents published over the last few years.

Please note that these tables account for COMBAT strength of the various units, not total tank park. For example, these tables do NOT include units away re-equipping (such as I/Panzer Regiment LSSAH, which was away at (?) Graffenwohr taking delivery of and training on their new Panthers - but they were not back "in the line" until August). If units re-equipping ARE included, then they are listed specifically (such as the units of the Volga Military District, which were the last units re-building after Stalingrad).
