Kursk - Some of the comments received to date...
And this page lists (some) of the comments I have been sent to date....
(Author's responses in blue - they reflect my subjective opinion - don't mean to offend - but if the caps fits...)
The Ultimate Question
- I enjoyed your Kursk page, any idea when it will be finished ?
- The single most hated question - I suppose the answer is, "when I find a spare year". Gets there slowly tho'..
1. General comments:
- One of the favourite questions: "why the interest in Kursk ?"
- Long story: I have a lingering family interest in tanks - my family have been tankies since 1916.
Also, I read bits and pieces about the war - started to learn about the Eastern Front - then came across
"Kursk - the largest tank battle in history". Then, the more I read, the less "right" it sounded -
so I had to start finding out for myself.
- Awesome page
- Thank you, thank you - more of the same please !
- "Do you speak German/Russian ?"
- My Russian is appalling - I can just about manage to wade through some German texts.
2. The Finnish contingent:
- Harri Antonnen: As a Finn I would like to correct some errors in your page concerned with the Finnish troops and the German 20.Geb.Armee:
- Sorry to all the Finns - typical Brit, I can't even spell other people's names !
Harri is now responsible for the new-look section on the Finns (due in place Feb 1998)
- Andreas Larka: On Your Kursk-page you mention the Finnish army. I find it a little bit peculiar or odd, because despight fighting the Soviets at the side of
the Germans, we Finns weren't allied with the Germans. So our armys movements etc. did not affect the German army at Kursk at any level. At
least not in my opinion.
- Sorry again. It was never my intention to suggest that the Finns were busy
obeying "der Fuhrer". I DO understand the situation, but I did want the OBs to reflect the full Eastern Front -
therefore including the Finnish forces in the line. The OBs will be amended (as stated above !)
3. On Maps:
4. And the plain weird (you know who you are ;) :
- Please tell what this page is for.
- Nope... I can't cope with answering this one...
- Since we are not in November 1997, I have to believe that the last
update to this page is 11/96.
- Look - I am a BRIT - dates are written as "dd/mm/yy" by all the civilised world
- why can't the Americans cope with this ??
- Addendum - Nov 99: alright, alright... so the Yanks and Brits share a language
[nominally], but not the sense of humour... sorry !
- How many German and Russian tanks were in use at the battle of Kursk ? Please give me exact numbers
- In the name of Beelzebub - why ask me questions that NO-ONE can agree
on the answer to !! Actually I suppose I am flattered that people think I might know a sensible answer !
- Where can I get information on the cause of the battle, the conduct, effects and lessons learnt. Please direct me to a web site.
- "Please direct me to a Web Site" - what do you think this is ???
- pleas work on this web site i need to do a school proqect
- Ah yes - callow youth !!
- Is this a game ???
- Apart from "No, don't be silly", the answer is - "ask my wife,
she wishes it was !"
- Sorry old chap, but your web site was an insult to the greater glory of that which what was fought for.
Condolences.
In maijoriam gloriam.
- I think I will always treasure this one as the crowning glory of silliness.
If anyone out there actually understands what the author of that one was on about - please let me know !
Also a shame that his (sexist assumption - sorry) Latin is even worse than mine...
- Interesting but stale comment you made on Americans inability to cope with how the civilized world writes dates. You pompous British revel in the
memory of Monty thinking little of how many soldiers he let die to keep things, 'tidy'. Your role model for battle should be Patton.
Your Prime Minister did nothing but play tricks on FDR. He bombed Berlin to receive civilian attacks by the Germans and sent token forces to assist in other
theaters so as to reap the spoils of war afterwards. Civilized indeed! Tell me, has Ford taught you to build Jaguar automobiles correctly yet?
Have you gotten enough technology and spare parts from U.S. yet to build a functioning fighter jet or tank yet?
Your nation is a 'Has been' and the sun sets early on the British Empire everyday now.
- OK... the Latin above may be the "silliest" - but this one always made me
wonder about the state of some people's minds. And just to annoy the hell out of all the Yanks out there [apologies to all the Americans
who have gone out of their way to be kind and helpful in the past):
- a) Monty was never my favourite general - those members of my family who
served under him tended to agree. But Patton ??? Caring for his troops ??? Per-lease !
- b) If FDR was dumb enough to be taken in by Churchill...
- c) Someone do tell me what "spoils of war" we Brits took out of World War 2 !
- d) Ford and Jaguar ? Well - let the auto-heads argue that one out !
- e) Planes... Pan-Avia Tornado ? The Jaguar ? Besides - whose avionics does the F-16 use ?
British !!
- f) Main Battle Tank - the British-built Challenger II - carrying the
finest tank gun in the world !
- g) Empire - damn - where DID it go ?
So let me make the point yet again: this site is produced by a Brit, who is quite happy to be a Brit (well,
most of the time), with the standard-issue Brit sense of humour. Sorry. Tough !
