Kursk - Armoured Unit Comparison


The table below shows a count of the major components for the following types of division:
Note that the "men" counted are only the combat troops - the rifle squads, engineers and so on; they are counted as "squad-equivalents", not as individual men.

The key points from this comparison:
  1. The Soviets had the edge in tanks in the newer format - not in the old
  2. On AT guns, the score was reasonably even - except that the German guns were much heavier
  3. The Soviets had the weight of artillery fire-power on their side
  4. But the Germans had the range - their bigger guns [10.5 and 15cm pieces]
  5. The Germans had far more organic transport
  6. They also had more AA fire-power
