This page gives you some idea of the sources and tools used for mapping

This first list is a list of the sources of data I have used:
  1. East View Publications - sell original Soviet maps
  2. Colonel David Glantz now sells a set of reproduced German and Soviet tactical maps - contact him for the details
  3. Xerox PARC Map Server - used for building maps of large areas
  4. ....for example - detailed code for: OstFront [40-70N/25-45E]
  5. US Geological Survey, EROS Data Centre - used for large 3d visualisations (I use the 30 Arc Second Datasets)
And this second list is a list of the software I use - and sources for it:
  1. 3dem50 - Shareware used for viewing USGS DEM files
  2. Visual Explore from WoolleySoft - used for creating detailed 3D visualisations
