Medium bomber, also used in small numbers as civilian transport. The early versions of the He 111 -- with a stepped cockpit -- flew in the Spanish civil war. During WWII the later developments of the He 111 with an unstepped, asymmetric, extensively glazed nose were used. The He 111 was a good medium bomber, but suffered severely from the Luftwaffe's lack of long-range escort fighters, and was kept in production long after it should have been replaced. Production ceased in 1944 after more than 7300 aircraft.
