The Mount Shasta Region Route Description

The Byway circles Mount Shasta, providing views from every angel of our nations second hghest volcano. From the town of Weed on the north, the route leaves Highway 97 and enters Interstate 5, the main north-south freeway of northern California. The view of the mountain here is up Diller Canyon to the summit of Shastina, Mount Shasta's northernmost peak.

Passing Black Butte, a small plug volcano, Interstate 5 comes to the City of Mt. Shasta. This full service community offers everything the travler might need, and is the center of mountaineering and exploration for Mount Shasta. Side roads lead high up the mountains slopes to Bunny Flat and the Old Ski Bowl area well above treeline, or west to the mountain lakes and rivers of the Eddys.

Just south of Mt. Shasta City, the Byway leaves Interstate 5 and heads east on Highway 89, en route to McCloud. (A recommended side trip of 6 miles further south on Interstate 5 will treat ythe traveler to the historic railroad toen of Dunsmuir, nstled in the Upper Sacramento River cnyon.) Driving over the south flank of Mount Shasta, the grasslands and high desert environs of the north are exchanged for conifer forests stretching as far as the eye can see. Mount Shasta Board and Ski Park is just off Highway 89 between Mt. Shasta and McCloud, and offers year-round recreation.
