U. S. Highways : Divided (Split) Routes

SplitMore than alternate routes, these routes are supposed to be equal splits in the highway. These split routes have been around since the planning stages of the US highway system in 1925-1926. There were no suffixed routes in the preliminary BPR 1925 plan. The first splits in routes approved were in Kansas to satisfy local disagreements about US 40 and US 340, then problems with the routings of US 50 and US 250. Utah's insistence on keeping US 30 caused another split. New York's refusal to use US 109 resulted in yet another split. The national route mileage is kept along only one of the branches. In US Numbered Highways 1989 by AASHTO, N and W routes were used for mileages. In the "American Highways" 1927 list, mileage was measured on N, E, or W, depending on the route. Like the other lists, routes are shown like (this) to denote historical / decommissioned status. Currently AASHTO recommends eliminating the existing split routes, possibly replacing one route with Alternate status or numbering it as different highway. An attempt from 1934 to 1945 to eliminate split routes in KY and TN failed, resulting in US 37 and US 143 being approved but not posted in the field as far as I know. As on other pages, a "+" is used to signify a nearby road junction as a terminus, "-" is used to designate a state border. Each road is linked to state-specific web sites for greater detail. A complete listing of those state sites is here.
