Definitions & Abbreviations:
- 2di - Two Digit Interstates, the mainline highways of the United States
- 2dus - Two (or One) Digit US route, the backbone of the grid system, includes US 101
- 3di - Three Digit Interstates, loops and spurs off the mainline routes
- 3dus - Three Digit US route, originally assigned branches of 2dus routes, now often
major routes in their own right.
- A - Alternate
- AASHO - American Association of State Highway Officials (The original creators of the US
Highway numbering plan)
- AASHTO - American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (The new
name of the same organization, stewards of the US Highway numbering plan)
- AB-nn - Alberta Provinical Highway nn
- Alt - Alternate
- ARC - Appalachian Regional Corridor - transportation corridors desigated for improvement
by the US congress, often with an future Interstate or US route designation planned, such
as "H" for what became US 48 III.
- B - Business or Bypass
- BC-nn - British Columbia Provincial Highway nn
- Big Dig - The project to bury I-93 in Boston, MA
- Bus - Business
- Byp - Bypass or By-Pass
- C - City
- Cont - Continued
- CR - County Road
- Curr - Current
- Dcmd - Decommissioned
- E - East
- Exist - Existed
- Exten - Extended
- Fwy or Frwy - Freeway
- Gou - H. M. Gousha or Gousha (now owned by Rand McNally)
- Hist - Historic
- HMG - H. M. Gousha or Gousha (now owned by Rand McNally)
- Hwy - Highway
- I-nn - Interstate nn
- IH-nn - Texas designation meaning Interstate Highway nn
- Jct - Junction
- K - "K" routes is the local usage for Kansas state highways
- M - "M" routes is the local usage for Michigan state highways and the British
usage for Motorways
- MB-nn - Manitoba Provincial Highway nn
- MTR - The usenet newsgroup misc.transport.road, a
place for discussion of road-related issues
- MX-nn - Mexico Federal Highway nn
- N - North
- Nat Geo - National Geographic
- NB-nn - New Brunswick Provincial Highway nn
- NF-nn - Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Highway nn
- NG - National Geographic
- NS-nn - Nova Scotia Provincial Highway nn
- NT-nn - Northwest Territorial Highway nn
- ON-nn - Ontario Provincial Highway nn
- Opt - Optional
- PE - Prince Edward Island Provincial Highway nn
- Pkwy - Parkway - used to desginate a more scenic highway in many states, alternately
used as another name for highway in others.

- QU-nn - Quebec Provincial Highway nn
- Rt or Rte - Route
- RMcN - Rand McNally
- S - South, sometimes used as Spur
- Shftd - Shifted
- SK-nn - Saskatchewan Provincial Highway nn
- SR - State Road
- T - Temporary
- TCH - Trans Canada Highway
- Temp - Temporary
- Trunc - Truncated
- U - "U" routes is the local usage for Utah state highways
- US nn - United States Highway nn
- W - West
- Y - Spur
- YT-nn - Yukon Territorial Highway nn
- Z - Some states use this letter for business routes or for spurs.
