Dorothy Eldridge, a peace activist and Nutley resident, founded the New Jersey Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy (SANE) in 1958. She served as director of the organization for 28 years. Through SANE she worked to stop nuclear weapons testing, and in 1980 she coordinated the New Jersey Freeze Campaign for a moratorium on the production, testing, and deployment of nuclear weapons.
