Ancient MosaicsWeb Archive: Survey of ancient mosaics, with some good images including my favorite mosaic, Herakleitos' knowingly-hellenistic "The Unswept Floor." From Robin Urton's Art Gallery (diverse!). More mosaics are on her Roman Art page. 10 good, high-res images of classical mosaics from ClassicalMosaics.com. The editor, Norman Tellis, also makes his own mosaics. Desite the great site name, however, this site doesn't contain much more than the 10 images, and some good modern mosaics links. Copies of select ancient mosaics from Italy's Mos Art Studio. Amazon. Mosaics of the Greek and Roman World by Katherine M. D. Dunbabin. You just might not be afford the coffee table after you buy this. On the other hand, it comes with over 300 plates! Sample chapter (the introduction) from the Cambridge UP site. Reviewed by Richard Brilliant, CAA.Review. "A handbook is supposed to offer a detailed, well-documented, up-to-date corpus of material, as complete as possible and arranged in such a way as to define the present state of the field under review, and to provide the basis for further study. Dunbabin has met that requirement reasonably well, although a less fragmented presentation of her subject and better reproduced illustrations would have improved the reader's grasp of ancient mosaics as a special art form." Reviewed by Martin Henig, British Archaeology June 2002. "Now Katherine Dunbabin has written a book which will be the basis of future work on mosaics in general for decades to come." Amazon. Ancient Mosaics by Roger Ling. Princeton UP blurb. Reviewed by Kenneth D.S. Lapatin, Bryn Mawr Classical Review 1999.04.23. "'Mosaic is a bizarre art-form.' So begins Roger Ling's excellent short survey. Packed with information, clearly organized, well illustrated, and affordably priced, this volume, originally published by the British Museum Press, will serve classicists, art historians, hobbyists, and general readers as a convenient introduction to an important medium." Amazon. The Alexander Mosaic: Stories of Victory and Defeat by Ada Cohen (Cambridge UP Studies in Classical Art and Iconography). Cambridge UP blurb.
