This anonymous miniature is commonly credited as a self portrait.
Because of his early death, André was never painted by a major painter, but portraits of Sir Thomas Mills by Sir Joshua Reynolds have been misidentified as André for more than a century. Mills, an officer who served with little distinction in Canada and ended his career in disgrace, was a personal friend of Reynolds, who painted him several times. One of the Mills portraits is the property of the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, and its identification was researched and corrected prior to a travelling exhibit of Reynolds' paintings in Canada several years ago.
Several other images of André exist as well as many secondary images and engravings done after his death. A particularly beautiful engraving was made from this miniature in the mid-19th century.
