It took nearly two years to build the Divisional Artillery of 2 NZEF, in which time many of the requirements changed. At the peak of its strength in Feb 1945, there were 35000 New Zealanders serving with 2 NZEF in Europe. The First, Second and Third Echelons of 2 NZEF were each built around an infantry brigade (4, 5, 6 resp.) and the field artillery regiments were given the same numbers as the brigades to which they were attached. The original CRA was Brig R. Miles.
Between 1940 and 1945, 6068 New Zealanders died on active service in Europe and 513 died in captivity. When the war ended in 1945, units were amalgamated and disbanded. Ref: "Official History of New Zealand in the Second World War" and information from gunners of 2 Div Arty. |
