3 Field Regiment
Formed in 1940 by amalgamation of the Field Artillery Brigades from Dunedin and Christchurch. Based at Addington. Tasked with training reinforcements for the 2nd and 3rd NZ Divisions. Used the areas of Addington, Burnham, Wingatui and Hororata.

Reactivated in 1946 as the New Zealand Artillery field regiment in the South Island. In 1949, moved to Central Bty at Dunedin. In 1961 RHQ moved to Burnham. In 1950, with Compulsory Military Training, the batteries were

  • 31 Bty Dunedin
  • 32 Bty Christchurch
  • 33 Bty Invercargill (disbanded 1961)
HQ Bty was raised at Burnham in 1967.

In 1972, the regiment, equipped with 105-mm M101A1 Howitzers, consisted of

  • RHQ Regular/Territorial, Burnham
  • HQ Bty Regular/Territorial, Burnham
  • 31(B) Bty Territorial, Dunedin
  • 32(E) Bty Regular/Territorial, Burnham
  • LAD Territorial, Burnham

The regiment was disbanded in 1989.
