PREVIOUS FEATURED QUESTION ABOUT NEW JERSEY HISTORY

Dear NJHM:

I am searching for some information on a hospital in Wyckoff called the Christian Sanitarium. Do you know where it was located and if it still exists?

Susanne

Dear Susanne:

According to "The Story of Wyckoff," published in 1939 by the Federal Writers' Project:

"On Siconac Avenue near Cedar Hill is the large Christian Sanitarium, a private institution for the treatment of nervous and mental cases. A series of modern buildings, it accommodates several hundred patients."

This is all I could find out about it. However, when I looked on my Hagstrom map of Wyckoff, I found Siconac Avenue and a Cedarhill Avenue, with the latter ending at the former. Thinking that the point where they meet might be "Cedar Hill," I took a ride to Wyckoff. There, on a hill right where they met, is a series of buildings that would have been considered modern in the 1930's and 1940's. It is laid out almost as a modern suburban office complex with small buildings and winding roads connecting them. If there was any doubt about the origins of these buildings, the name of the complex eliminated it. It is called the Christian Health Care Center. So, the Sanitarium exists, although with a different name, and possibly with a different function.

We hope this helps, and let us know if you require any additional information.
