PREVIOUS QUESTION ABOUT NEW JERSEY HISTORY
Dear NJHM: Can you tell me the names of players from New Jersey who were elected to the Hall of Fame from the Negro Leagues? Michele
Dear Michele:
That is a tough one, but I assume you mean players in the Negro
Leagues that played (as opposed to being born) in New Jersey and were
elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. According to "The Jersey
Game" by James DiClerico and Barry Pavelec, there were three.
Raymond "Hooks" Dandridge and Monte Irvin from the Newark
Eagles, and John Henry "Pops" Lloyd from the Atlantic City
Bacharachs. However, since that book was published in 1991, there has
been one more player elected to the Hall; Leon Day in 1995, also from
the Newark Eagles. This list excludes players who may have played in
the Negro Leagues, but were qualified (ten years major league
experience) and elected as Major Leaguers (ie - Larry Doby).
