It had been said, as so often such things are said, that the war would be over by Christmas of 1914. It wasn't of course. The printed media has always extolled the Christmas holidays in one manner or another, usually by publishing appropriately themed illustrations or printing stories that reflect in some way or another an aspect of the idealized Christmas spirit.

Great War magazine readers were treated to all manner of colorful, cheerful, thoughtful, pious and even belligerent special illustrations and photographs. This applied to both sides, though it must be said that often German sentimentality was quite apparent.

In the following pages, we treat you to a more or less random, but very richly varied sampling of Great War Christmas art and illustrations.
