Surviving Shermans
Anniston Army
Depot, AL, USA
In Alabama, Jim Goetz & Joe
DeMarco were denied access to the Anniston Army Depot for security
reasons. The Public Affairs Officer, Joan Gustafson, recently sent Joe
some photos. Joe thinks they were taken by Mark Cleghorn, Photo Lab, ANAD.
Each is shown below, as captioned by Joan Gustafson. We thank Joe for sharing
these photos with us.

This Grizzly is probably
one of the ex-Portuguese Army batch sold off in the early 1980s. Before
it was sent over to Portugal in the mid-1950s, this Grizzly was rebuilt
in Canada. It got the all-round vision commander's cupola and was retrofitted
with Sexton bogies. These can be identified by the thicker ribs on the
side of the casting. (The Sexton 25 pdr SP Gun's bogies had stiffer springs
and a stiffer bogie casting to ensure better stability when firing the
25 pdr gun.)
When it was restored its
CDP track was replaced by brand new T48 rubber chevron track. |

The serial number is listed
as 3305 is not correct as only 188 Grizzlies were built. They have their
so-called 'Shop number' struck in right below the hull casting manufacturer's
crest on the hull front. The CMH found another number halfway the right-hand
final drive housing (where they chalked "SN"), which must be that part's
serial number instead of the tank's. Serial numbers are a confusing matter
indeed. |

Note that this M4A1E9's tracks
do not have the extended end connectors fitted. This was in fact more often
the case than not. |
