8th Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment

Flanders 1917

The 8th Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment became the pioneer battalion of the 18th (Eastern) Division in February 1915. It remained in this role until the end of the war. In June 1917 it moved to the Flanders front around Ypres, moving into billets near Poperinghe before going into action in the Third Battle of Ypres on 31st July 1917.

This photograph is one of a series that was taken of the platoons of the battalion in one of the villages close to Poperinghe.
