13th Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment

Cooden Camp 1915

The 13th Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment (3rd South Downs) was formed at Bexhill-on-Sea on 20th November 1914 by Lieutenant Colonel Claude Lowther MP. It moved straight into Cooden Camp, close by, and took over tents recently vacataed by men from the other South Downs battalions. In early 1915 work began on the construction of wooden huts, which is clearly illustrated in this photograph taken during this period.
