8th Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment

Colchester 1914

The 8th Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment was formed at Chichester in September 1914. Many of its early recruits were older men, some with many years previous service in the British Army. It soon moved to Chichester, where the men were billeted in tents before moving to larger barracks.

This photograph was taken sometime in late September or early October 1914 and shows a typical group of 8th Battalion men. Uniforms were in short supply, and the variation in appearance is certainly clear from this photograph. Most men don't even have a regimental cap badge!
