On June 17, 1776, the Massachusetts State Cruiser "Defense", Captain Seth
Harding, which had sailed from Plymouth that morning, sailed into Nantasket
Roads after two heavily armed British transports, "Annabella" and "Howe".
Assisted by the "Lee", he got between the two transports and called upon the
British to strike their colors. After a hour of heavy firing, the British
called for quarter. The transports were found to have on board about 200
regulars of the 71st Regiment, including then Lieutenant Archibald Campbell
(later Lt Colonel).. The next morning, they chased and captured another sail,
which proved to be the transport "John and George", carrying 6 guns,, and
having on board, another 100 soldiers of the 71st Regiment. |

Massachusetts, fell in with a packet ship "Eagle", having a crew of 60 men.
Aboard the prize, were 1 Colonel killed, 4 Lt Colonels and 3 Majors captured
who had taken passage on the "Eagle" so as to join their regiments in America. |
