Captures Of British Army Personnel At Sea During The American Revolutionary War

State Cruiser "Defense" (and State Cruiser "Lee", Captain Daniel Waters comm,d)   Capture of 300 British Soldiers with their Colonel
p 66-67 On June 17, 1776, the Massachusetts State Cruiser "Defense", Captain Seth Harding, which had sailed from Plymouth that morning, sailed into Nantasket Roads after two heavily armed British transports, "Annabella" and "Howe". Assisted by the "Lee", he got between the two transports and called upon the British to strike their colors. After a hour of heavy firing, the British called for quarter. The transports were found to have on board about 200 regulars of the 71st Regiment, including then Lieutenant Archibald Campbell (later Lt Colonel).. The next morning, they chased and captured another sail, which proved to be the transport "John and George", carrying 6 guns,, and having on board, another 100 soldiers of the 71st Regiment.

p 137 In August 1779, the 14 gun Brig "Mars", Captain Y. Taylor of Pennsylvania, captured the transport Brig "Polly", having on board 214 Hessians. Taken off Sandy Hook.

p 71 In September 1776, the 16 gun Brig "Massachusetts", Captain D. Souther, captured a Brig of six guns and 28 men, having on board a company of dragoons.
p 140 In 1777 took a ship and six other vessels, in one of which were 63 Hessian Chasseurs.

Privateer "Vengeance"   Capture of a Colonel, 4 Lt Colonels and 3 Majors
p 118 On September 21, 1778, the 18 gun Brig "Vengeance", Captain Newman of Massachusetts, fell in with a packet ship "Eagle", having a crew of 60 men. Aboard the prize, were 1 Colonel killed, 4 Lt Colonels and 3 Majors captured who had taken passage on the "Eagle" so as to join their regiments in America.
Privateer "Warren"   Capture of 100 soldiers
p 73-74 In June 1776, while under the command of Captain Phillips, seized a transport armed with 4 guns and having on board 100 soldiers.
