Go to William Cathcart biographical note

Lord Cathcart by Gainsborough

There seems to be no surviving portraits of William Schaw Cathcart by a major artist but Doc M. located this lovely, unfinished image by Gainsborough. The Dictionary of British Portraiture makes no mention of it, listing only three likenesses for him: a watercolor by Luke Clennell, one by an unknown artist, and a mezzotint by H. Meyer after a portrait by J. Hoppner. Since they do not list the Hoppner portrait itself, I assume it may be lost.1
