This contemporary engraving by Hawkins is based on Hamilton's The Capture of General Lee (now in the collection of the British Museum). It shows the capture of General Charles Lee by a detachment of 16th Light Dragoons which was led by Cornet Banastre Tarleton. It should be noted that the primary figure almost certainly represents Tarleton's commanding officer on the expedition, Lieutenant Colonel William Harcourt. None of the figures are strong portraits, and it is extremely unlikely that the artist back in England had even heard of the obscure Cornet who not yet made a name for himself.
