Angelina and Sarah Grimkéwere born into a large family of wealthy slaveowners in elegant Charleston, South Carolina. These sisters moved to the North to defend the rights of blacks and women.

As speakers for the New York Anti-Slavery Society, they were the first women to publicly lecture to audiences, including men.

In letters, essays, and studies, they drew parallels between racism and sexism.
