USS STEIN FF-1065, the fifteenth of forty-six KNOX class frigates is named in honor of Corporal Tony Stein, Marine Hero and World War II Medal of Honor winner.

The KNOX class is configured for optimum anti-submarine warfare performance. Equipped with Harpoon Missile system and 5" - 54 caliber dual-purpose rapid-fire gun. Stein is capable of fighting defensively against air and surface threats and providing naval gunfire support for amphibious missions ashore.

The keel for the USS STEIN was laid on 1 June 1970 at Lockheed Shipbuilding in Seattle, Washington. She was launched 19 December 1970 and was commissioned on 8 January 1972 at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Washington.

STEIN is powered by two automatically fried boilers, which supply 1200psi steam through dual steam turbines to a single five-blade screw. The propulsion plant is rated at 35,000 shaft HP. STEIN has made 9 overseas deployments in her 19 years of commissioned service, including the complete circumnavigation of the globe in 1987. She has operated in support of national policy in the Iran hostage crisis, Iran-Iraq War, and in Operation Desert Storm. Stein has visited over thirty countries and served as a goodwill ambassador the world over. STEIN's unit awards include two Meritorious Unit Citations, two Navy Expeditionary Medals, the Humanitarian Service Medal, and the Southwest Asia Service Medal. STEIN was decommissioned and transferred to Fleet Reserve as a mobilization asset in March 1992.
