METRO-NORTH HUDSON LINE

These pages will cover what was once the mainline of the New York Central from mid-town Manhattan in New York City north to Albany.

The NYC operated an extensive network of suburban lines up to Westchester County and beyond.  This, of course, was inherited by the Penn Central after 1968.  By the time Conrail came along in 1976, things had gotten pretty bleak.  Old cars and well worn locomotives made for a poor commute.  In the early 1980's, Metro-North was formed to operate the commuter lines from Grand Central Terminal.  This included the old NYC lines and parts of the old New Haven also.  By the time the photos were taken on these pages freight service had become rather limited, with a train to the Bronx at night and locals serving the few industries left along the Hudson River.  The busiest being the auto plant near Tarrytown ( now closed up ).
