HIROSE, Takeo. Born Oita Prefecture; graduated
naval academy (1889); served on the armored ship Fuso in Sino-Japanese
war, seeing action at battle of Yalu (1894); sent to study in Russia
(1897-99); at legation in St. Petersburg as attaché (1899-1902);
became a hero of the Russo-Japanese war (1904-05) when killed in attempt
to close Port Arthur with a blockship (March 27, 1904); a cultured and
able officer, became a model of self-sacrifice for the naval officer
corps. |
