Battle Damages

Altogether 10 destroyers fired 16 torpedoes for 3 hits against an unready force at anchor. Japanese doctrine called for ships to attack individually, the risk of collision being to high in mass night attacks. They also had too much faith in the accuracy of the torpedo, attacking from to great a range, often greater than they realized. The three ships struck were:

Tsarevich

Hit 80 feet from the stern on the port side just abaft the magazine. The blow struck directly over a transverse bulkhead, which was badly buckled, allowing two compartments below the protective deck to flood. The steering gear was also damaged.

Retvizan

Struck forward on the port side, between transverse bulkheads and abreast the forward turret. The torpedo created a hole six feet in diameter. The damaged area measured 30'x12'. One thwartship compartment below the protective deck was flooded and several frames were ruptured, 10 required replacement.

Pallada

Struck directly over auxiliary coal bunker and magazine for 12-pdr. Although the blow was somewhat cushioned by the coal, the torpedo created a hole seven feet in diameter and an elliptical depression 20'x12' in the ships side. Along with serious flooding some of the 12-pdr. cartridges exploded causing a serious fire that killed several of the crew that were sleeping on deck.

Astonishing as it may sound, the Japanese boats that took part in this attack sustained no loss or damage from enemy fire. Oboro damaged her own bow when she collided with Ikazuchi.
