In 1902 the NZ Garrison Artillery Volunteer Regiment (NZ GAV) was formed with divisions in Lyttleton, Canterbury, Otago, Wellington, and Auckland. It was reorganised in 1911 into the Canterbury Field Artillery Brigade, the Otago Field Artillery Brigade (in the South Island) and the NZ Garrison Artillery Regiment. In 1921 the Otago and Canterbury Field Artillery Brigades were amalgamated, the NZ Garrison Artillery Regiment lapsed and 3 Field Artillery Brigade was formed. This was reorganised as the 3rd Field Brigade NZA in 1924, becoming the 3rd Artillery Brigade Group in 1937 and eventually 3 Field Regiment RNZA. The Regiment was disbanded in 1989 and the last serving guns left the South Island in 1999.
