Formed as part of 5 Infantry Brigade, Second Echelon, 2NZEF, 5 Fd Regt left NZ for England in 1940. After training there for about six months they were sent to Greece in time to be evacuated to Crete. After this disastrous introduction to the War in Greece and Crete, 5th Field Regiment served in the Desert Campaign and later in Italy, with honour and distinction.
